How does the PicoWay® Laser work?
The Candela PicoWay® Laser is an advanced tattoo removal technology that uses ultra short laser pulses to safely and precisely break down tattoo ink, delivering effective results across a wide range of tattoos and skin tones.
Click the tabs to learn more about the benefits of PicoWay® technology, including speed and efficiency, comfort and precision, colour versatility, and suitability for all skin tones.
The PicoWay® laser targets tattoo ink with exceptional accuracy while minimizing heat exposure to the surrounding skin. This results in a more comfortable treatment experience with reduced discomfort. Its precise energy delivery also allows the ink to break down more efficiently, often reducing the number of treatments needed.
Unlike traditional tattoo removal lasers that can struggle with lighter or pastel inks, the PicoWay® uses three distinct wavelengths to effectively target a broad spectrum of tattoo colours. This advanced versatility allows for more precise treatment across a wide range of ink colours and skin tones, including those that are typically difficult to remove.
A key advantage of the PicoWay® laser is its ability to safely and effectively treat a full range of skin tones, from light to dark. Using multiple wavelengths, PicoWay® is FDA cleared for use on all Fitzpatrick skin types, making it a trusted option for inclusive, effective tattoo removal.
One of the standout features of the PicoWay® is its ability to safely treat a broad range of skin tones, from light to dark. With its multiple wavelengths, the PicoWay® is the only FDA-cleared laser for use on all Fitzpatrick skin types, making it a safe and effective option for people with various skin tones.
Frequently Asked Questions
The cost of laser tattoo removal varies from person to person and depends on factors like the size of the tattoo, the colours used, how much ink is present, and how many treatments are needed. Because every tattoo is different, pricing is best determined during a consultation after we’ve had a chance to assess your tattoo in person.
Tattoo removal is a specialized process that requires advanced equipment, trained professionals, and multiple sessions over time. For that reason, removal typically costs more than getting a tattoo applied. We focus on being transparent with pricing and will walk you through your options clearly so you know what to expect before starting treatment.
Our goal is to provide safe, effective results using professional-grade technology, and we’re always happy to answer questions so you can feel confident and informed moving forward.
Tattoo removal is a gradual process and the timeline varies for each person. It depends on how your body responds to treatment, as well as factors like the size, colours, depth, and age of your tattoo. Because the body needs time to naturally clear the ink, full removal often takes several months and, in some cases, a year or longer.
Treatments are spaced out to allow your skin to heal and your immune system to do its work. We typically recommend waiting at least six to eight weeks between sessions, and sometimes longer for best results. Having sessions too close together can slow progress and increase the risk of skin irritation.
While it’s not possible to predict the exact number of sessions in advance, most people need multiple treatments. During your consultation, we’ll assess your tattoo and give you a realistic estimate and treatment range so you know what to expect from the start.
The speed of tattoo removal varies from person to person and depends on several factors related to both you and your tattoo. During your consultation, we assess things like your skin type, where the tattoo is located, the colours used, how much ink is present, whether it’s a cover-up, and if there is any pre-existing scarring. These details help us estimate how many treatments may be needed.
Your overall health also plays a role. A strong immune system can help your body clear ink more efficiently, which is why staying active, hydrated, and following aftercare instructions can support better results over time.
While laser technology continues to advance, tattoo removal is still a gradual process that happens over multiple sessions. Our goal is to create a personalized treatment plan that delivers safe, effective results at a pace that’s right for your skin.
Laser tattoo removal does involve some discomfort, but most people find it much more manageable than they expect. Many describe the sensation as similar to getting a tattoo, often compared to a quick rubber band snap against the skin. It can be uncomfortable, but it’s generally very tolerable and sessions are usually short.
To help keep you comfortable, most clinics offer ways to soothe or numb the skin during treatment. This may include cold air, ice packs, or topical numbing options. Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but the vast majority of clients are surprised by how manageable the process feels.
Our goal is to make your experience as comfortable as possible while delivering safe, effective results.
In most cases, laser tattoo removal does not cause scarring. When performed using professional Q-switched laser technology and paired with proper aftercare, scarring from the removal process itself is very uncommon.
Some tattoos already have scarring from when they were originally applied. In these cases, the laser can remove the ink but cannot eliminate existing scar tissue. During your consultation, we carefully assess your tattoo and will let you know if any pre-existing scarring is present.
The laser targets tattoo ink, not healthy skin. Following aftercare instructions is an important part of healing, as picking at scabs or blisters can increase the risk of scarring. Certain skin types, including those prone to keloids, may also have a higher risk, which is why we review medical history in advance.
Overall, scarring from laser tattoo removal is rare. Our focus is on safe, proven treatment methods that support natural healing and great results.
